Running Calendar: ready for the next eight months

Two things you know about me already: I love running and I love writing. One more thing I love is iCal on my Mac.

I have a specific calendar category dedicated to running, and it is officially all filled out until Sunday, October 17. For the rest of February and all of March, it is all about continuing to build the base I have started and work on my core (as I have mentioned in previous posts).

The great thing once March comes is that I will have a pseudo-coach working with me: her name is Mom. I think my mom is just as excited about the marathon as I am, and she is ready to take on my workouts with me. While her knees and her feet certainly not going to allow her to the running with me, she is going to ride her bike or come to the track me, etc. Maybe I’ll even get her on board with my healthy eating and she’ll become healthy cooking chef (haha!) so she can cook some good power meals for me!

I am officially powered up for the next eight months, at least in iCal. With my light teal color chosen to label my workout for each day, there is something for each day. Yes, I have even labeled my rest days because those are just as important as the workout days.

Now that I have the workouts in place, my next big goal is to take a look at what my staple foods will be. I’m excited for this part because this won’t be something that will be a change just for training, but it is something I hope to maintain well after I have completed the marathon. I already eat fairly healthy and am conscious of what I am eating, so as to eat for energy and for sustenance, but I know I have a long way to go with getting there 100%. I’m working on it though. I will be happy to share with you any foods that I find key in my diet. Already, I know that one of them is peanut butter…a good dose of protein. I love my toast or english muffin with peanut butter for a good morning pre-workout bite.

I’ve got my workouts in place, my pseudo-coach ready to go, and I’m on my way to getting my diet streamlined…looks like I am well on my way.

Let’s keep this going.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon is exactly eight months from today…let’s do it!

a little bit o’ rest…a little bit o’ walking…

I took today as a rest day, since we decided to spend the day in San Diego today. We woke up and took off early, and didn’t get home until late. I’m hoping to get a morning run in tomorrow…my last beachside run for quite some time. I think that should be a good way to celebrate Valentine’s Day…a morning run along the beach, with my dear friends who I will definitely miss when I move, and hopefully a little breakfast action to top it all off!

I should probably get to drinking my cup of tea here, and get to bed sometime soon…otherwise, knowing me I won’t want to wake up in the morning…and I really want to make this run happen.

Hope you all are having a lovely weekend…get out there for a good Valentine’s Day run (and then have some dark chocolate ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

Happy exercising!

last workout before sunday’s 10k

Today was my last workout before running the 10K I am registered for on Sunday. My workout today was 4 x 5:00, with a 2 min. brisk walk in between each one. I had to make this a treadmill workout since it is pouring rain outside. I actually benefitted from using the treadmill for this workout, because it allowed me to adjust my pace and keep going as I wished, with no option for slowing down. I had to adjust my breathing instead of adjusting my pace if I started to get tired at all.

The workout was going just lovely, I was feeling great, and then in the middle of my last 5:00 stretch who walks into the cardio center? That’s right, the girl with the dog…the dog who apparently works out on the treadmill. Come to find out when another girl came in just after her and looked surprise, girl with dog confessed that she only does this when it rains. I suppose that is acceptable, however I’m still not sure how I feel about doing it when there are other people working out considering the small size of the cardio center here. To each his own…what can you do?!

Anyway, I finished up my workout and cooled down. I’m looking forward to a rest day tomorrow and getting in some good stretching. I’m also going to head over to the health and fitness expo that is being held in conjunction with the 10K, so I can pick up my race number and look around at the different vendors.

Although this has been a challenging week as far as motivation goes, I feel great that I got a good week of solid workouts in. How is your training going? Have you been having any challenges lately?

Hope everyone has a great Friday evening, and enjoy your Saturday workout or rest day. I’ll be back tomorrow, and of course I hope you are looking as forward to Sunday’s 10K recap as I am!

Last workout before 10K…success.

weekend recap

Well, weekends usually bring long runs but after a few longer runs this past week I needed to work on my body, stretching, and allowing my body to recover correctly so longer runs weren’t the case for me yesterday and today.

After a fabulous time on Friday night at a wrap party in Hollywood (I know, I’m so fancy…right?! LOL), my friends and I knew I would not be waking up for the weekly Saturday morning run at 8:30am. However, at 6:30am on Saturday morning I popped up without an alarm and even though I was still a little tired I was determined to stay awake, get ready, and head out for the morning run with the group.

Sure enough, I had some breakfast and headed out to meet with everyone. A beautiful Saturday morning down at the beach and we tackled a great run. I fit in a 4.5 miles and felt great, and stretched out for a little while after the run.

We went out to dinner last night, and I tried to keep it healthy yet delicious at the same time. I succeeded for the most part, with an entree of sesame-crusted seared ahi tuna, sweet potato fries, and grilled zucchini. The martini I had was even acai berry (is acai berry still good for you if it is in a cocktail?!). That was all fine and dandy…then Jeremy decided we needed gelato for dessert. It was delicious, and everyone needs sweets every now and then. I had a small (they let me have 3 flavors!) with roasted banana flavor, extra dark chocolate flavor, and cinnamon flavor. Mmm mmm, good.

It was apparent everyone was exhausted when afterward we planned on going out, but then we ended up at my apartment just hanging out. We called it a night and I went to bed as soon as everyone went home, expecting that I would get a lot of rest and wake up early for a Sunday morning run.

I certainly did get a lot of rest and did wake up early, but a Sunday morning run just was not in the works for me. Instead, I headed out for breakfast and some errands with Chris and Kelly. I did wear workout apparel though so that I was sure to get a workout in later.

I did a long stretching session this afternoon, so I am waiting to get a good workout in tonight. It’s not good to workout after stretching out too much–the long stretches should come in post-workout or during a stretch-only time. I have found that works out best for me.

Tonight I will get in a 1.5-mile run and some strength training. I’m looking forward to a shorter run to work on a quicker pace, and this will then help me with increasing my pace on longer runs as well. I’ll also be able to work on my breathing, so if I can get some better breathing going during the quick-pace, shorter workouts I should be able to easily transfer that to longer workouts as well.

Good weekend workouts to end the month just the right way! January has been a success in kicking off the 10-month training process to successfully make it to 26.2 in October, with a gradual mileage increase, solid strength training routine, and enough stretching to keep the muscles in good condition.

Looking forward to another fantastic month in February, full of its own challenges and experiences. Hopefully by the end of February I will have mastered consistent breathing techniques and will maintain motivation.

What are your exercise goals for the February?

Weekend workouts…success.

rest and recover

Today is a rest and recover day for me. After pushing the limit on Wednesday with a 9.75 mile workout, and going another 4 miles yesterday I wanted to be sure to allow my body time to rest and recover.

I had some errands to run today so I got my walking in that way. I also did a lot of stretching and some crunches to keep my body going and to continue working on getting into tip-top marathon shape.

As someone who is formerly one of the worst people at remembering to stretch and kind of hates taking the time to do it, I have been pretty good about making myself fit it in. I stretch just enough before runs (not too much) and certainly after runs to ensure that my muscles don’t cramp up. On days like today, I am even forcing myself to remember to stretch while I allow my body to recover, because that will only mean a better workout tomorrow.

My body is feeling good and I am certainly looking forward to a great run again tomorrow. Hoping to get a morning one in with some friends before I have to head to an even about an hour north of me for the afternoon. Be sure to look for an update tomorrow evening, and see how it is going.

And, as always I love hearing your feedback–how your workouts are going, any tips or tricks, favorite foods that give you energy and fuel, favorite workouts, etc.

Let’s keep training together! Detroit, here we come ๐Ÿ™‚

Rest and recover…success.

four-mile night run

Yes, I was a bit sore today from yesterday’s long run. Yes, I drank a ton of water today. No, that was not going to stop me today.

Kelly and I went to the outlets today and had a nice afternoon…it was a great day out! We headed to the Reebok store to look and see what kind of good deals we could find. I got some great new apparel for running. Unfortunately, they did not have any of the running capris that I absolutely love, but they did have long sleeve running tops with thumbholes (and I bought 3!).

We had a delicious lunch on the patio at BJ’s Brewery–I had a BBQ pulled pork sandwich w/ crispy onions on it and it was incredibly delicious.

So, what more do you need than a good afternoon and new running apparel to get you pumped up for a run? Well, when I got home and got my mail a new issue of Runner’s World in my mailbox certainly helped increase the excitement even more!

I got a few things done, took a cat nap, and met everyone at the pier for a night run. We got in a good four miles tonight and I still am feeling great. I am attributing to feeling better during my runs a lot to my food and drink habits lately–what a difference it makes!

Tomorrow will certainly be a cross-training day so that I can keep the cardio up and workouts in my routine, but I also want toย allow my body to rest and recover as well.

I hope everyone is training well, eating well, and taking on new exercise challenges!! I hope you’re enjoying this blog too, and if you have any feedback feel free to let me know.

4-mile night run…success.

today instead of tomorrow

I had planned on getting a workout in today, as Friday is my designated rest day. However, my right calf is rather tight and I’m extremely exhausted today. I’d much rather relax and enjoy my comfy PJs, couch, snuggie, and TV tonight…and maybe even some stale microwave popcorn (yes, I LOVE stale popcorn) with some chocolate buttercream frosting. Wow, this is starting to sound more like the anti-runner’s blog!

Anyway, in case you are wondering why I didn’t enjoy the SoCal weather and get an outdoor workout in today it is because the SoCal weather is still absolutely insane! The wind is out of control, the rain does not stop…and there was even hail that stuck to the ground in LA today. Even more of the 405 was flooded and cars were getting stuck like crazy. Needless to stay, I stuck around town today–I wasn’t about to get stuck or blown away!

I also took on a freelance writing project early this morning and that has been keeping me busy, along with a work phone call and some work reports.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s workout! Look for a mid-afternoon update ๐Ÿ™‚

Rest and indulgence day…success.
